You don’t read your emails… not really

A few years ago I was in a seminar. The leader wanted to prove a point and asked us all to close our eyes. We could hear the chalk on the blackboard as he was writing as we waited. Then he asked us to open our eyes and read what was on the blackboard. “Paris in the spring” I said to myself… but didn’t raise my hand. Other people did. He picked a good looking woman from the back of the room. She proudly read “Paris in the spring”. The leader asked: “Are you sure?” She was sure, light as day, what was written on the blackboard was “Paris in the spring.”
He asked her to go closer, and she read it from there… Paris in the spring. He asked her to go up to the blackboard and touch the words as she read them. When she got to Paris in the… we all gasped. There was another the… what was really written on the board: Paris in the the spring…
We all listen that way. We already know what’s there, and stop looking, stop listening.
Where else do you relate to people like you already know them? That you already know everything there is to know and no one can contribute to you?
