I have been a coach for a long time. One of my jobs as a coach is to help people change their beliefs so that they can change their lives.
I’ve never had an effective coach myself. I am learning to coach myself… I desperately need my life changed!
One distinction I have used effectively to teach how “context” or “backdrop” guides your perception is using the example of a photo studio.
Imagine a photo studio. Big empty room. A park bench smack in the middle and a woman and a man sit on it.
We’ll change the backdrop, a big painted canvas with different scenes on it… Let’s see how the story changes.
- First we’ll use a backdrop of the Manhattan skyline at night… got the story? I thought so.
- Second is a city park, the light is strong, the shadows are short. Got the story? You got it.
- Third: a cemetery. Freshly dugged graves, lots of flowers… The story came like a flash… right?
Notice that NOTHING changed in the foreground. The background did only. With that the story, automatically changed.
This is your life… what’s your backdrop?
